“Heather led us through the B Corp certification process thoughtfully and perceptively and along the way actually encouraged us to become a better company by helping us to see ourselves through the lens of our accomplishments.”
– Mark Ruedrich, President & Brewmaster, North Coast Brewing Co.
North Coast Brewing Co. became Mendocino County’s second Certified B Corp on September 9, 2015. This amazing craft brewery produces 15 specialty beers sold around the world. It has a local restaurant, small retail shop, and a farm where it composts its spent grains and sequesters carbon.
They sought B Corp Certification to do two things: first, to acknowledge and gain recognition for the way they have always done business – with an eye on the triple bottom line – and second, to engage with the B Impact Assessment in a way that will enable the company to enhance its positive social and environmental impacts.
North Coast Brewing Co. scores especially well in the B Impact Assessment for its environmental impacts, and has pioneered the use of “beerigation” in which it spreads its waste beer and yeast slurry on its company’s landscaping and on its farm’s pastures. Its many environmental initiatives include installation of an on-site solar array to generate renewable energy, and implementation of an environmental corporate travel policy as well as a “green” purchasing policy. Its new state-of-the-art mash filter utilizes significantly less water, energy and other inputs compared to a more traditional craft brewing process.
Jazz is a passion for North Coast Brewing Co., and a portion of sales of its Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale goes to its partner Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz in support of jazz education. North Coast Brewing Co. supports several jazz festivals around the country as well as many, many local nonprofit and charitable organizations and events.
